A New School (1937 to Present)
In 1934, the Irishtown (District 4), Gore (District 7), and Aiden Lair (District 3) schools were closed and merged into District 1, thanks in part to improved roads and the arrival of school buses. With a growing student population, the Olmstedville Union School could no longer hold them all. Her hallways were full, her classrooms stretched to their limits. In 1935, the district voted to build a larger, more modern school on land once owned by Thomas Powers and later James McSweeney. The old house on the property had burned in 1930, and in its place, a new future was about to rise. On May 24, permission was granted by the Regents Committee on Administration. Less than a mile up the road, the foundation for a new school was laid. The Minerva School in District 2 remained active, and families with elementary-aged children were given a choice between the two districts. But it was Olmstedville’s school—rebuilt and reimagined—that would soon become the heart of a unified community. Funded in part by the WPA, the new school opened in the fall of 1937. She stood proudly with her solid brick walls, wide windows, and a gymnasium that doubled as a stage. Classrooms were now divided by grade level, and—for the first time—students enjoyed a hot lunch. The age of tin pails was over. High school classes met upstairs; elementary students learned below. It was a new era, and she was ready for it. 1945 Full Centralization In 1945, Minerva Elementary, District 2 closed its doors and all students now attended the new school. Up to this point it had been known as Olmstedville Union School. With this final merger the new school was renamed Minerva Central school. The now closed Minerva Elementary school became the Minerva Town Hall. 1961 Addition In 1961, she expanded. A significant addition was built on her left side, creating a new front entrance, a cafeteria on the first floor, and three new classrooms above. Care was taken to match her original Art Deco features—a sign of respect for her character and history. 1965 Addition Just a few years later, in 1965, a dedicated elementary wing was added to her back, bringing four classrooms and two bathrooms. As noted above, Minerva School in District 2 had merged with Olmstedville, and the space was much needed. 1992 Capital Project The most dramatic transformation came with the 1992 Capital Project. A new wing rose on her left side, housing a new gymnasium with a full stage, locker rooms, a technology classroom with an attached shop, a music room, coach’s office, atrium, and bathrooms. Her original gym was thoughtfully converted into three classrooms, a nurse’s office, and a conference-style room on the first floor. Upstairs, she gained a library, a computer lab, and office spaces. Two small upstairs classrooms were combined into one spacious science room, giving her students room to experiment, question, and explore. 2007 Capital Project By 2007, attention turned to safety and modernization. A new vestibule entry was built, the parking lot repaved and better lit. Video security systems and outdoor PA speakers were installed. Behind the scenes, mechanical systems were replaced: a new server room, roof repairs, electrical upgrades, and a heating system ensured she could keep up with the times. Inside and out, her doors and lights were replaced, giving her a refreshed and welcoming look. Program spaces were modernized too: a new distance learning room, a fitness room, and upgrades to the stage lighting and sound systems. Outdoors, the tennis and basketball courts were rebuilt and made handicap accessible. Even her bus garage was renewed—fuel tanks removed, ventilation improved, the roof and doors replaced, and a new vehicle lift installed. 2025 Capital Project Now approaching ninety, she is still going strong. The 2025 Capital Project is focused on preserving her strength and beauty: upgrades to the front parking area, monument, sidewalk, and ramp; a new PA system; recoated roofs; and all vents and fans replaced. The septic system in the bus garage will be updated, and the four original bathrooms from 1936 will finally be modernized. Her stage will receive new curtains, and her gymnasium floor will be resurfaced—with fresh padding to embrace generations still to come. To Merge or Not to Merge At least twice in her long life, there were efforts to change her future entirely—two formal merger studies proposed folding her into a larger district. Each time, the community studied the numbers, listened to the arguments, and weighed the costs. And each time, they said no. They weren’t just voting against a merger. They were voting for her—for the school at the heart of Minerva, the school that had grown with their children, adapted to their needs, and carried their history in her walls. And so she stayed. Independent. Familiar. Herself. |
