MINERVA LAKE
November 6,1930 - Minerva may build artificial lake. Flat lands of John Bradley & F M LaBar and a few other small areas under consideration - Jones Brook outlet to Callahan Pond flows thru - which could furnish water. Chas J. Weaver, C. E. was employed and thinks project is feasible. Lake covering 100 acres could be created.
November 20,1930 - Minerva town officials have read map of proposed lake, showing extent and shape. Map may be viewed at Mt. View Hotel.
December 25,1930 - Minerva to have artificial lake. Majority wins 156 - 15. One hundred acres to be flooded - estimate $30,000. Special board meeting vote authorizes town board to issue bonds for amount not exceeding $30,000. Lake will cover lands of John Bradley, Orson Morse, G. Coughlin, Reuben Smith, John Lynn and F. M. LaBar. This vote settles questions over 50 years of discussions.
Minerva Lake was formed in 1932. The largest island is named Dragontail, middle size island is named Pine, smallest island is named Beaver. On July 5th, 1958 the beach was dedicated to Francis Donnelly, Town Supervisor for 46 years and is now called Donnelly Beach on Minerva Lake. He was believed to be the longest tenured Town Supervisor in the United States at the time of his death in 1980.
Minerva Lake is a beautiful Adirondack place. No boats over 5 HP can be used on the lake.It is surrounded by privately owned homes and also by Morningside Cottages, owned by LaBar. There is a campground, tennis court, picnic area, skating & hockey rink. Also there is a refreshment stand open in the summer and a playground. The playground was^ donated by the Minerva Service Organization and erected by volunteers. A bandstand was erected in 1979 and dedicated in memory of James Clinton Brannon on Sunday August 26,1979. Summer concerts are held at the bandstand. In addition to his position as Highway Supt. Of the Town of Minerva, he was active in all community affairs.
